A new year, a new mission

Luke 4:16-21
16 He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written: 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free,19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” 20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
As we stand at the threshold of a new year, we often reflect on the past and ponder the future. Resolutions are made, goals are set, and dreams are rekindled. But today, I want to direct our attention to something deeper than resolutions: God's mission for our lives. Our scripture today takes us to a pivotal moment in Jesus' ministry. In Luke 4:16-21, Jesus stood in the synagogue of His hometown, opened the scroll of Isaiah, and declared His mission. His words were revolutionary then, and they remain profoundly relevant for us now.

Jesus' words were more than a proclamation-they were a declaration of purpose. He revealed His mission to bring good news to the poor, freedom for the oppressed, and sight for the blind. As followers of Christ, we are called to align our lives with His mission. This is not merelyfor pastors or missionaries; it is for every believer. You might think, "What can I offer at this stage of life?" Let me tell you: you have something invaluable. Your life experience, wisdom, and faith journey have equipped you uniquely for relational ministry. Psalm 92:14 reminds us, "They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green." God's mission does not come with an expiration date.

Consider the story of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism. In 1735, Wesley embarked on a mission to Georgia to evangelize Native Americans and serve as a parish priest. Despite his dedication, he faced numerous challenges. His strict adherence to religious practices created tension, and he eventually left Georgia, feeling like a failure. But this so-called failure became a turning point. It taught Wesley valuable lessons about grace and relational ministry, shaping him into the impactful leader we remember today.

Take a moment to reflect: How has God equipped you to be part of His mission? Perhaps it is your ability to listen, your gift of encouragement, or the wisdom you've gained through trials and triumphs. God can use every part of your story for His glory. In 2 Corinthians 1:3-4, we are reminded that God comforts us in our troubles so that we can comfort others.

Another story from John Wesley's life illustrates this beautifully. On his voyage to Georgia, Wesley encountered a group of Moravians who profoundly influenced him. During a violent storm at sea, while others panicked, the Moravians sang hymns and prayed with calm assurance. Wesley was struck by their faith and realized he lacked that same peace. This encounter prompted deep introspection, ultimately leading to his "Aldersgate experience," where he felt his heart "strangely warmed" and gained a renewed sense of purpose.

Who is God calling you to invest in this year? It could be a neighbor, a younger family member, or a group in your community. Your mission field may not be far away; often, it is right in front of us. As you pray, ask the Holy Spirit to reveal one person or group you can intentionally invest in with the love of Christ. Pray for Clarity and Direction: Start by asking God to show you where He wants you to serve. Be Present: Sometimes, the greatest gift you can give is your time and attention. Share Your Story: Your testimony can inspire and encourage others to trust in God. Extend Grace: Build relationships with patience and compassion, just as Jesus did.

As we enter this new year, let us remember that Jesus' mission is our mission. We are called to bring good news to the poor, freedom to the oppressed, and hope to the hurting. You have a vital role to play in God's kingdom, no matter your age or stage in life. Let this be the year we step boldly into God's mission. Reflect on how God has equipped you, identify your mission field, and take that first step of faith. Together, let us proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.

As we embrace the new year and seek to align ourselves with God's mission, I encourage you to adopt the "Operation Andrew" model of evangelism, inspired by John 1:41-45. This approach emphasizes the power of personal relationships in sharing the Gospel, much like Andrew, who, after meeting Jesus, immediately sought out his brother Simon Peter to bring him to the Messiah. This week, let's focus on the first principle of Operation Andrew: Look Around. Identify your mission field where you live, work, or go to school. Make a list of individuals you know who need Jesus Christ and commit to praying for them regularly. By intentionally seeking opportunities to share God's love within our existing relationships, we can make a profound impact for His kingdom. Let us follow Andrew's example, bringing those we care about to Jesus, trusting that He will transform their lives as He has transformed ours.
